See Absolute Barrister in The Independent
When the Legal Aid Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO) comes into force on 1st April 2013 it brings with it massive legal aid reforms and has been branded a ‘day of shame for our legal system’ by the Labour peer, Lord Bach. It is estimated that around 200,000 people will no longer be able to get legal aid in a vast number of civil cases, from divorce to financial settlement and child custody. Let’s put it in black and white: in your run-of-the-mill divorce you will now no longer get legal aid.
So what can you do? No doubt many will try and represent themselves privately thinking they cannot afford the costs of solicitors fees, and the uncertainty that that can entail – the worry over receiving letters, or the cost of a solicitor calling on the telephone.
There is another way and people need not turn to the traditional high street solicitor model. Use a barrister instead, right from the outset. Pay a fixed fee. Know where you stand, be in control and solve your legal problems the new way.
